The night before his leg was to be amputated, Peregrine dragged himself before the crucifix and begged the crucified Lord to heal him. At age 60, he was diagnosed with cancer in his leg. Years of this extreme wear resulted in varicose veins, which eventually broke down into open, running sores. Peregrine practiced a penance of standing instead of sitting whenever possible. He joined the Servite Order and dedicated his life to caring for the sick, poor, and marginalized. At the age of 30, he converted to Catholicism and gave his life to God.
